At Monday’s Wauseon Board of Education meeting, Rick Stidham presented a design for a sign proposing to name the school district’s football stadium at Harmon Field “Larry Fruth Stadium.” Stidham presented two designs for a sign to be placed at the site.

The proposal to rename the stadium is being pushed by former Wauseon football player Bart Graf, now of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. In a Zoom presentation from his home at a school board meeting in May, Graf said he created a petition to honor Fruth, who led the Wauseon football team from 1959 to 1983.

Fruth, vice chairman of the Wauseon School Board, was not present at Monday’s meeting.

Recalling Fruth’s dedication to the job, Graf told the school board how Fruth and other coaches “helped shape our lives and made us the men we are today.” Harmon Field must have the name of the greatest and greatest football coach in school history next to his name. This place will always be Coach Fruth Stadium for me. He was proud of this field for 24 years and he taught us that same pride.

The proposal will be voted on at the August 9 School Council meeting. Records from the stadium’s former owner state that “Harmon Field” is to remain part of the field’s name.

On personnel, motions were approved for: the alternate slate of Rachel Wixey and Associates; the resignation of Kyle Storrer as sixth-grade ELA teacher in middle school; one-year certified contracts with Jordan Wilkinson as a sixth-grade middle school ELA teacher and with Rebekah Cales as a fourth-grade teacher; one-year limited classified contracts to Kathryan Thatcher as a three-hour middle school cook and Jodi Frank as an elementary school preschool aide; Lucas Schang as a backup bus driver; Matt Mennetti as a backup van driver; additional one-year limited contracts to Michelle Eberle – Elementary School LPDC Building Representative, Amber Fryzel – Middle School LPDC Building Representative, Jessica Gerig – Elementary School Student Council, Ami Richer – Middle School LPDC Building Representative, high school and Jill Welch – representative elementary school LPDC building; additional one-year limited contracts for Todd Gype and Walter Smith as junior football coaches; volunteer coaches Aaron Harris, Zane Krall and Blake Pitzen – wrestling, Brendan Wilson – high school football and Kyle Wilson, assistant football coach; and Kaylee Poorman as a student pool employee.

Appointments may depend on clean background checks.

Other motions approved included: Student Handbooks 2021-22 and Bus Routes 2021-22, with changes made as needed.

The board went into executive session to discuss the employee hiring review. No action has been taken.
