USF sifts through more details of proposed new football stadium

USF AD Michael Kelly considers Sept. 4, 2027, a “great target date” for the school to launch a new on-campus football stadium, according to TAMPA BAY TIMES’ Matt Baker. USF is to host Miami that day, and officials at a BOT meeting last month said ’26 is the “earliest possible date a stadium could open.” An opening date in the 26-28 range “would work well with the Bulls’ lease at Raymond James Stadium,” which spans the 27 season. Kelly discussed the “next steps he would like to accomplish between now and Summer: Identifying a Location and Determining Some Financial Details”. USF “is considering a handful of locations” and cost estimates range from $250 million to $400 million. Kelly “hopes to reduce that number and where the money will come from in the coming months.” He added that the project “remains a ‘north star’ for the athletic department” (TAMPA BAY TIME, 1/6).

PREACHING PATIENCE: In Orlando, Matt Murschel writes that Kelly “preaches patience when discussing the future of the Bulls’ athletic department.” Since joining in 2018, Kelly has “oversaw fundraising efforts to secure nearly $30 million in gifts and pledges.” He also “oversaw the construction of the $22 million indoor performance facility,” which is slated for completion in the summer of 22. Kelly just received a new five-year contract extension that keeps him as than AD until June 28 (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 1/6).
