Unilorin in the quarter-finals of the Higher Institutions Football League
The University of Ilorin men’s football team has qualified for the quarter-finals of the Higher Institution Football League (HiFL).
Also known as Unilorin Warriors, the team beat their league-leading Makurdi University of Agriculture 3-2 on aggregate to win one of the available tickets to the last eight.
The ‘Warriors’, who previously beat the Makurdi-based side 1-0 in the first leg of the Round of 16, are set to qualify on away goals rule after playing out a 2-2 draw at Ilorin Wednesday.
The match played at the main bowl at the Unilorin Sports Complex saw the home side have to come back after two goals down to secure a draw against the visitors who are also the league’s inaugural champions.
Goals from John Aogo and Unite Amodu had earlier given the visitors a comfortable lead before Jamiu Mujeeb netted a penalty in the half-time kick to reduce the hosts’ tally.
With the score line left open to both teams, Ogungbenro Mustapha, in his usual fashion, scored Unilorin’s second goal in the 59th minute to push his side to a safer angle.
Team Unilorin will now face Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University of Technology Bauchi University (ATBU) in the quarter-finals, which is supposed to be a two-legged affair.
