Two boys charged after Scottish football stadium fire

Police have charged two boys in connection with a fire at a historic Scottish football stadium.

The couple, aged 12 and 14, have been charged with arson after a fire destroyed buildings at Fife Stadium.

Cops say they are saddened to see the Eastvale FC stadium in Windygates targeted at 10pm on Tuesday as it was an “important part of the village’s footballing heritage”.

Sergeant Craig Fyall, of Levenmouth Police Station, said: ‘This is another reminder of the devastation that can be caused by a fire and it is extremely fortunate that no one was injured on this occasion.

“Eastvale and Greig Park have always been an important part of the village’s footballing heritage, so it was particularly disappointing to see the facility destroyed by fire.

“The response from the community, elected officials and businesses following Tuesday’s events to come together in support of the football club has been quite remarkable and I hope the facility can be restored as soon as possible.”

On Wednesday morning, club chairman David Smith noted how “absolutely devastated” he had felt after the fire.

In a Facebook post, he said: “Devastated doesn’t even come close.

“Well what a brutal night for Eastvale FC, the committee and assistants who have been trying all year to get the venue up to standard for next season!

“We actually just accepted our application and joined the league at 8 p.m. and at 8:45 p.m. the building was burned down!

“All the showers have just been completed and the fixed building has just been painted inside and cleaned top to bottom!!

“Sitting here right now, absolutely devastated, I’ve spent so much up there.”
