Bologna FC have announced former Brazilian-born Italian international midfielder Thiago Motta as their new coach following the departure of Sinisa Milhajlovic.
Motta joined Bologna on a two-year deal until 2024. The 40-year-old beat competition from Paulo Sousa and Claudio Ranieri to get the job.
Motta joins his new club two months after leaving Spezia after his one-year stint.
Alexandre Hugeux, Alessandro Colasante, Simon Colinet, Alfred Dossou-Yovo, Flavio Garcia, Iago Lozano, Paolo Aiello, Nicolo Prandelli will join his staff in Bologna.
Motta left Spezia in June this year after guiding Spezia to avoid relegation with a game to spare. He achieved this feat despite budget restrictions and limited transfer deals.
The 2021/22 campaign didn’t start well but he turned things around for the club in January. The former Genoa boss has won the Serie A Coach of the Month award for January 2022. He left the Serie A side in the summer to find a new challenge.
Bologna have parted ways with Serbian manager Mihajlovic after a winless start to the season. La Dotta have taken just three points from their first five Serie A games, drawing three and losing two.
The 53-year-old is fighting his second battle with leukemia. This interfered with the club’s plans for the season. The poor start to the season led to the inevitable dismissal of Mihajlovic.
Luca Vigiani secured Bologna’s first win of the season when they met Fiorentina yesterday.
Bologna came back from one goal to beat La Viola. The goals came from Musa Barrow and Serie A top scorer Marko Arnautovic.
Motta will take charge of his first game when another team from Florence come to visit on Saturday. It’s a big chance for Motta to get his first win as Bologna boss.
Empoli is in slightly worse shape. They are one of five teams in the league that have not won a game this season.
