THE Philippines won a medal in women’s football for the first time in 37 years after clinching bronze with a 2-1 win over Myanmar at the 31st Southeast Asian Games on Saturday May 21, 2022 in Vietnam.
The Philippines found themselves down early after Myanmar converted a complimenting penalty from Win Theingi Tun in the 24th minute. However, the Philippines made a fiery comeback from Sarina Bolden and Quinley Quesada late in the game.
Bolden hit the back of the net in the 73rd minute, while Quesada, who came off the bench in the bronze medal game, sealed it with a goal in the 76th minute.
The Philippines won the bronze medal in 1985 in the first-ever women’s soccer event at the SEA Games.
In contrast, the Philippines have won three gold medals in boxing. Olympian Eumir Marcial edged Delio Anzaqeci Mouzinho of Timor-Leste by points, 5-0, for the men’s middleweight division.
Rogen Ladon beat Vietnam’s Thao Tran Van, 3-2, in the men’s flyweight division final, while Ian Clark Bautista edged Myanmar’s Naing Latt via points, 5-0.
