The ODU football stadium last hosted high school games in the 1980s. That changes on Saturday when Maury, Oscar Smith play for the titles.

Old Dominion played its last game this season at SB Ballard Stadium, but the venue will host the biggest high school football games of the year on Saturday, with two home teams in attendance.

Oscar Smith, the top-ranked team at Hampton Roads all season, faces James Madison High of Vienna at noon for the Class 6 State Championship, then Maury meets Stone Bridge of Ashburn at 4:30 p.m. in the class 5.

At Liberty University in Lynchburg, Phoebus plays Liberty Christian at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

The ODU Stadium last hosted high school football games in the 1980s, when the venue was known as Foreman Field.

The stadium underwent a $ 70 million reconstruction, reopening for the 2019 season. Including the bleachers and suites, it accommodates 22,480 spectators.

The Virginia High School League has hosted its state championship games on college campuses for years, including Virginia, Virginia Tech, Liberty, and Hampton. The league, which oversees the state’s more than 300 public schools, moved games to high school venues in a shortened spring 2021 season due to the pandemic.

The ODU will also host the matches of the classes 5 and 6 soccer championships in 2022.

Oscar Smith (12-1) is the reigning Class 6 state champion, and the Tigers have played six of the last eight games for the state title.

Maury won his final crown in 2019, ending an 80-year drought for the state football championship. The Commodores play their home games at Powhatan Field, a few early tries from Ballard Stadium.
