Former striker-turned-Talksport expert Chris Iwelumo praised Paul Heckingbottom’s work at Sheffield United.
The former Scotland international credited Heckingbottom with the Blades’ recent good form which saw them climb the league standings.
A poor start to the campaign this season saw Slavisa Jokanovic lose his managerial post last month.
Sheffield United had been hoping to bounce back from relegation from the Premier League to come back straight up, but it hasn’t worked out very well so far.
“Paul Heckingbottom has been in the background, he knows what it’s about and he looks like this fantastic team, ”Iwelumo told Talksport, via the star.
“They’ve been underperforming all season, but they kept going, grabbing points and are very much in contention.”
Heckingbottom changed things, however, and won all three of his matches as the team’s permanent manager.
Frustratingly, the team has seen three games postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak which has devastated the league.
Heckingbottom’s side are currently 12th in the championship and have won their last four games.
Their next game is against Middlesbrough on January 1. They will face former manager Chris Wilder, who is now in charge of Riverside.
Sheffield United’s results speak for themselves.
An away victory at Fulham on December 20 was notably a remarkable result.
This team is largely the same one that played in the Premier League for two seasons, and even finished ninth in 2019-20.
The disruption of Covid-19 hasn’t helped maintain the team’s momentum, but as long as they can stay focused they should be a force to be reckoned with in the second half of the season.
