Summerville puts the finishing touches on the football stadium as the team prepares for the season | Preparation sports

Artificial turf is laid and opponents are lined up for the Summerville High School football season.

Memorial Stadium renovations are nearing completion. The new artificial turf pitch was installed this spring and more site renovations are on track to be completed soon. The most notable project planned for the stadium that has yet to be completed is the landscaping and transformation of the area behind the end zone which houses the Green Wave student section. When complete, this part of the stadium will include a small park and a statue honoring former Green Wave coach John McKissick and his family.

“We’ve had a few practices on the new ground already and our spring game was there and it’s amazing,” Summerville coach Ian Rafferty said. “The kids are excited about it and it will be nice to have the grass these weeks when it’s raining a lot.”

Last year, spring practices were canceled due to COVID-19 and summer practices and practices were also affected by the pandemic. This offseason Rafferty has had more opportunities to assess and work with athletes and it has been easier for athletes to do their summer training.

“We’ve been able to do more and the work our guys have been doing in the weight room throughout the year should help us out,” Rafferty said. “We had a good spring and our kids are getting stronger and faster.”

Summerville had six returning defensive starters for summer practices, but only three offensive starters returned.

“We’ve lost all of our starting offensive linemen, but we’ve got some big boys looking to play on the line,” Rafferty said. “We need to develop some depth, but we have good, talented players.”

Summerville, along with Ashley Ridge, Fort Dorchester and Woodland, will participate in the Dorchester County Football Jamboree on Aug. 20 at Memorial Stadium. The Green Wave will begin its regular season on August 27 at home against Westside.

The rest of Summerville’s games are against teams from the 7-AAAAA region and the 8-AAAAA region. The Wave opens its regional schedule on October 8 when it hosts Stall.
