Emma Raducanu wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year award

The Sports Personality of the Year awards have come under fire for their decision to bestow praise and accolades on the England men’s football team, despite not winning anything.

The main gong of the night went to teenage tennis sensation Emma Raducanu for her memorable 2021 US Open victory, while Olympic duo Tom Daley and Adam Peaty came second and third respectively in the race for the award.

While viewers were happy with the result, the fact that the England national team won two awards on the night was not well received by many home spectators.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate was named Coach of the Year, while the entire squad shared the Team of the Year honor, with many suggesting none of these accolades were warranted given that England were beaten by Italy in the final; make sure their trophy-free period is now 55 and counts.

It would be misleading to suggest that 2021 has not been an incredible year for the England football team, reaching their first grand final since the heroics of 1966.

However, in a year littered with athletic excellence in just about every other direction in several different sports, one could argue that there were more worthy entrants to win these awards.

After seeing their team named Team of the Year, Southgate said: “It’s a team. What won people over is that from young to old they’ve worked together all summer.

“They have brilliantly represented the country on and on the ground.”

However, facing the winners of the GB team and Chelsea, Champions League winner Thomas Tuchel, the reaction on social media suggested that justice had not been served in this category.

In response to England confirming Southgate’s status as Coach of the Year on Twitter, one user replied: “Pathetic … terrible decision … even worse, a team that hasn’t won anything gets team of the year! “

Their feelings were echoed by another Twitter user, who compared England’s efforts for Euro 2020 to those of the successful Solheim Cup squad.

“How on earth can the England football team be the team of the year ?? The only nominee not to win anything,” they explained.

Many viewers accused the England side of not deserving their Team of the Year award

“They managed not to win at home in front of their own fans when the Solheim Cup team won away without any support.”

The backlash continued long after the ceremony was over, with one viewer writing: “The England football team win the sports team of the year = joke, right ?? For what exactly ? “

One even accused both the coach and the England team of lacking grace in the face of defeat after Italy knocked them down on penalties, claiming: Losers I have never seen them in an international cup final by dropping their medals. “
