Speaking at a press briefing after a meeting, the chairman of the national teams committee, Kazi Nabil Ahmed, said: “Spaniard Javier Cabrera has been appointed our new national team coach for 11 month, ending in December 2022. We expect him to be here by the 15th of this month. “

The BFF vice-president said that the Spaniard’s experience in regional football and the information regarding Bangladeshi football will help him do this job well.

Cabrera has never before led a national team or a club team as a head coach.

His first assignment will be to guide Bangladesh in two FIFA friendlies against Indonesia in Bali on January 24-27.

Cabrera’s appointment comes as Jamie Day, the former coach, was put on leave in September last year. The game’s local governing body then put Bashundhara Kings’ Oscar Bruzon and Abahani’s Mario Lemos on the interim coaches for two separate tournaments.
