Samford vs Florida preview

Things haven’t been going well lately for Florida with three straight losses to Georgia, LSU and Kentucky.

Leaving one at Samford would stand out all the more for the Gators and head coach Dan Mullen, who is trying to save his job according to the Associated Press. Samford, an FCS team, hasn’t beaten an SEC team since 1934 in a win over Ole Miss. The Bulldogs are 2-78-3 against all-time SEC teams according to the Associated Press.

“One of the most important things Coach always tells us is not to listen to outside noise,” Gators goaltender Stewart Reese told The Associated Press. “One thing I’ve learned in six years of college football is that they’re going to praise you when you’re up and they’ll kick your ass when you’re down.”

“At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what everyone else has to say,” added Reese. “We have to do what we have to do for our coach to make sure we end the season the right way. “

Samford enters the game after a 35-14 win over The Citadel. The Bulldogs scored in all three phases for the win. Midnight Steward returned a fumble from 94 yards for a touchdown. Montrell Washington returned a punt for a touchdown. Jay Stanton and DeMarcus Ware raced for touchdowns.

Stanton, the Bulldogs’ first rusher, averages 5.2 yards per carry. Bulldogs quarterback Liam Welch can run well too, averaging 4.7 yards per attempt. Welch also has 2,700 passing yards and 17 touchdowns. Washington was the preferred receiver with 45 catches for 688 yards and seven touchdowns.

As Samford matched his best defensive performance of the season, the Bulldogs allowed an average of 35.89 points and 480.3 yards per game. No Bulldog rusher has more than two bags.

“We have to be in attack mode early in the game and hope we are very effective in all of our calls,” Bulldogs head coach Chris Hatcher told The Associated Press. “We’re going to go out there, play hard, keep the game plan simple and let our guys go play and see what happens.”

Samford may not be sure which Gators quarterback will be suitable. Anthony Richardson has been sidelined with injury, which means another start for Emory Jones if Richardson sits again. Mullen has nodded that it will be Richardson.

“We believe he will be cleared to play on Saturday,” Mullen said according to Orlando Sentinel’s Edgar Thompson.

Either way, the Bulldogs have a challenge. Jones has 1,675 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and a 66.4% completion rate. He also leads the ground team with 543 yards and three touchdowns on 101 carries. Richardson has 474 passing yards, five touchdowns and a 57.9% success rate. He also ran for 374 yards and three touchdowns in his previous appearances.

Jacob Copeland and Justin Shorter have been the Gators’ favorite receivers all season. Both have 27 or more catches for over 370 yards each. Likewise, Dameon Pierce and Malik Davis were the top running backs with over 60 carries and 320 yards each.

Florida’s defense has struggled recently to give up more than 40 points per game. The Gators are looking to re-establish themselves as the unit that threw a shutout against Vanderbilt 42-0 on October 9.

Gators linebacker coach Christian Robinson replaced Tod Grantham as defensive coordinator to turn things around.

“He brings enormous energy, juice, encouragement to the players. He brings a different aspect to coaching that really helps us. We appreciate that, ”Gators linebacker Mohamoud Diabate said of Robinson per Sports Illustrated’s All Gators. “The younger ones come up to me after practice saying, ‘Yeah, we love Rob. So everyone is buying into what Coach Rob is doing.
