Has a football team won the quadruple? History of Liverpool’s four trophy attempts and best seasons

Liverpool are, by a number of major trophies, the most successful team in English football.

Although they have faded somewhat in recent decades, the arrival of Jurgen Klopp in 2015 has reinvigorated the club. The German manager took Liverpool to back-to-back Champions League finals and saw them rival Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, with the sides pushing each other close in domestic competitions.

Winning the League Cup was routine for Guardiola, having lifted the trophy in every season from 2017/18 to 2020/21. However, this season saw the streak broken. Man City were knocked out of the competition by West Ham in the fourth round.

Liverpool advanced to the final, where they faced Chelsea. After a scoreless game, the final was decided by a penalty shootout, with the shootout reaching the 11th round.

With a trophy already in the bag and a win still possible in the remaining trio, many are starting to wonder if a quadruple could be on the cards for Liverpool.

Did a team win the quadruple?

The legendary quadruple is extremely difficult – and has proven impossible in the modern (post-1992) era of the Champions League.

This implies that a team wins its national league, its continental competition and the two national cups. It should be noted that with these criteria, the teams of Spain, Italy, Germany and France cannot win a quadruple. Unlike England, which has both the FA Cup and the League Cup, these countries only have one domestic cup competition.

France had a second cup competition, the Coupe de la Ligue, which ran from 1993 to 2020, but it was suspended to reduce the number of games in the season, and there was little talk of bringing it back .

Some would argue that other competitions can constitute a quadruple, such as a Club World Cup or a European Super Cup. However, while these are certainly achievements, purists wouldn’t consider them part of a true quadruple.

Keeping that in mind, a few English teams have come close to pulling off the feat in the past. Most recently, in the 2018/19 season, Manchester City won all three domestic trophies. However, they were knocked out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage, so they only managed a hat-trick.

Their city rivals Manchester United came closer than any other English side, when they completed a Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble in 1998/99. They were knocked out of the League Cup by Tottenham Hotspur in the last eight.

Although not English, the Celtic have achieved the feat. In the 1966/67 season, they managed a real quadruple. Jock Stein’s side have won the European Cup, Scottish First Division, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup, to complete a quadruple. They also won the Glasgow Cup, although the significance of this trophy is debatable.

Which teams won the treble?

The most famous hat-trick in English football is the Manchester United hat-trick. They included European success in their achievement, as the 1998/99 season saw them lift the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

Manchester City were the first team to score a domestic treble in the 2018/19 season, when they won the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup in the same season.

Liverpool have scored two hat-tricks in their history. In the 2000/01 season they won the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup. Previously, in 1983/1984, they managed to win the league, the League Cup and the European Cup.

In addition to Manchester Unitedthere have been eight other continental club hat-tricks which include European Cup success: Barcelona (2008/09 and 2014/15), Bayern Munich (2012/13 and 2019/20), InterMilan (2009/10), PSV Eindhoven (1987/88), Ajax (1971/72) and Celtic (1966/67).

What is the most trophies won by Liverpool in a season?

The most trophies won by Liverpool in a season is three. In the 1983/84 season the Reds won the league, League Cup and European Cup, while in the 2000/01 season they won the UEFA Cup as well as both domestic cups .

Liverpool have won many doubles in their history. They have scored the league and FA Cup double once, in 1985/86, and they have scored the league and League Cup double twice, successively in 1981/82 and 1982/83.

Liverpool have also combined league and European success on several occasions. In 1976/77 they won the European Championship and Cup – their first continental victory at six. Before that success, they won the league and the UEFA Cup twice, in 1972/73 and 1975/76.

When the Merseyside giants won their third European Cup, in 1980/81, they again lifted a second trophy, with the League Cup.

If Liverpool score a hat-trick this year, it will equal their record for trophies in a season. If they go even further and win the quadruple, it will be a new club record for major trophies in a single season.
