First-ever Horseheads women’s football team ready to go | WETM

HORSEHEADS, NY (WETM) — Being first will always go down in history.

The first-ever Horseheads women’s flag football team will take to the field this spring. With a roster of 20 players, the Blue Raiders will be the only women’s team in the Elmira area to play in the inaugural season of Division IV and New York State.

The 2022 schedule has a total of five regular season games with the potential for two additional playoff games if teams can advance to the final round.

Below is an overview of the full schedule which includes a scrum this weekend. A total of eight teams will compete in Section IV with Horseheads. These are Ithaca, Binghamton, EU which has two teams, Norwich, Chenango Valley and Owego.

The addition of women’s flag soccer is part of NYSPHSAA’s initiative to increase opportunity in the game. In an effort to grow the game and provide access to all potential players, New York NFL teams will participate in the education of incorporated play for girls across the state.
