Fire damages Denver Broncos football stadium

DENVER — A fire damaged seats at Empower Field in Mile High, the home stadium of the Denver Broncos.

According to a tweet from the Denver Fire Department, the cause of the fire is currently unknown, but the fire affected the third level suite and sitting area.

Video from the area showed a large plume of smoke coming from the stadium, as well as a fire in the stadium seating area.

At the time of the fire, there was a second level event involving about 100 people, said Greg Pixley of the Denver Fire Department. They were all able to leave the area safely.

Once the crews entered the stadium, they found a fire burning in the suite on level four and in the seating area on the third level, Pixley said. He said the plastic seats produced a plume of black smoke.

According to Empower Field’s Twitter account, the fire started in a construction area. Pixley said he was not aware of any ongoing maintenance at the stadium, but it is something fire investigators will be looking into.

Pixley said a sprinkler system activated, but firefighters were called to completely extinguish the blaze. He said they were lucky the sprinklers held the fire “in check” while crews drove to the scene.

The fire was brought under control at 2:43 p.m.
