FC Bengaluru United launches women’s football team

Reigning BDFA Super Division League champions FC Bengaluru United recently marked their foray into women’s football with the launch of their KSFA Women’s Division B team. The team represents the best of local talent and marks a milestone in the growth and development of women’s soccer in the state.

The team was selected after an intensive week-long selection trial held in the city in early March and the team was launched on March 8, the International Day of wife. Female footballers from schools and local communities participated with great zeal and enthusiasm, a true testament to the growing interest in women’s football in the state.

“During its brief three-year run, FC Bengaluru United has already set the benchmark for professionally managed football clubs in India, and has also received huge accolades for its performance on the pitch,” said said Gaurav Manchanda, owner of FC Bengaluru. United. “Establishing a footprint in women’s football has been a natural transition for us and we are confident that our women’s team will soon set the standards for other teams to emulate.”

“The launch of the IWL marked a significant milestone in the development of women’s football in the country,” said coach John Kenneth Raj, technical director of the United Academy. “It is encouraging to see the KSFA launching three women’s leagues as part of the IWL and we are delighted that our team is playing in the KSFA Division B and growing and developing through this progression path.”

FC Bengaluru United was founded in 2018 and has already recorded several milestones in its short journey. The club was crowned consecutive Citrus Ventures BDFA Super Division champions (2020 and 2021). Their stellar run in 2021 included a 14-game unbeaten streak that included 12 wins and two draws. FCBU were invited to participate in the 130th edition of the Durand Cup in 2021. They reached the semi-finals in their first appearance, which included an emotional unbeaten in the group stage.

In January 2021, Sevilla FC, one of the giants of European club football, finalized a partnership agreement with FC Bengaluru United and Nimida Sports as part of the Spanish football club’s expansion plans to grow its brand in the international.
