The Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams are being celebrated and honored this week by the city of Los Angeles — but there’s another big recognition of a championship football team happening closer to home.
At the Thursday, Feb. 17 meeting of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners, commissioners will pass a resolution — and present a framed copy — honoring the James B. Dudley High School Panthers football team led by the trainer Steven Davis. The team won the 2021 State 3-A Football Championship on Friday, December 10.
On February 17, Guilford County Board of Commissioners Chairman Skip Alston will read the resolution honoring Dudley for the team’s pivotal victory over JH Rose High School as well as the other games Dudley won that put them on the line. position to win. championship.
Part of the resolution reads: “Whereas this victory marks the team’s first state championship in five years, bringing its total to seven state football championships; and Whereas this is the first state football title for the Panthers since 2016 and will be a crowning jewel in Dudley’s crown of athletic achievement; and Whereas this victory brings the title back to Guilford County for a second consecutive year, bringing our football championship total to 34…. It is therefore now resolved by the Guilford County Board of Commissioners that they hereby congratulate the James B. Dudley High School Football Team on their outstanding victory and hereby express their admiration and appreciation for the great pride and the honor they brought to our county as the 2021 3A State Football Champions.”
The evening should therefore be pleasant for the players as well as for the commissioners; and, while the board of six Democrats and three Republicans are often at odds, this welfare action will be something the entire board should be able to rally around.
The resolution also says Dudley persevered through a rigorous schedule with the help of a strong defense and powerful offense to win football’s highest honor in North Carolina high school athletics.
You know there must be some really good football players coming through the county Guilford ranks because last year the Board of Commissioners honored the Grimsley Whirlies football team who beat the Cardinal Gibbons High School 28-8 to win 4-A football. state championship.
