Columbia High School unveils new football stadium to the community

COLUMBIA, Mississippi (WDAM) – Columbia High School opened the doors to its new soccer field, Walter Payton Field, on Thursday.

The school held a ceremony in honor of Walter Payton and his legacy at Columbia High School and the city.

“It’s probably the most beautiful stadium in the state of Mississippi. It was built on respect and love, ”says Walter Payton’s brother, Eddie.

Walter Payton is a Professional Football Hall of Fame member who played at Columbia High School. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993.

Eddie explains why Walter’s Field and Monument is important.

“It is a monument of hard work, dedication and belief in God. When you want to know what made Walter who he was, those three things stand out. And if he can from Columbia, then you can from anywhere, Eddie said.

Family and friends attended the event to make remarks and reunite with old friends.

Professional Football Hall of Fame member Robert Brazile shared some thoughts on the new pitch.

“His legacy and the hard work he put into and off the pitch will always be cherished in this little place here in Colombia, because that’s what he started out for,” said Brazile.

A few Columbia football players share their remarks on the new pitch.

“Me personally, I actually admire Walter Payton. You know, one of the best running backs, you know, that ever came to Columbia High School, which he is, and that’s just one of the most important things I really love about Walter Payton. ”Said running back Miguel Coo.

“Walter Payton, you know, it’s my family. So I admire him a lot and one day I hope to be awesome like him, ”said linebacker Jalon Anderson.

Columbia’s first game at Walter Payton Field is against the Petal Panthers on Friday at 7 p.m.
