College Football Today – Championship Week Updates, Highlights, Biggest Moments & More

It’s Champions Week! Which means it’s the last week of the college football season, which has really gone quickly. Now there were a bunch of surprising coaching moves earlier this week, starting with Lincoln Riley going to USC, Brian Kelly going to LSU and Notre Dame announcing Marcus Freeman as Kelly’s replacement at Notre Dame. But we still have a few games to watch, because aside from Georgia there are places up for grabs in the College Football Playoff, so let’s go.
Title defenses usually fail. Nick Saban’s Alabama have won six of the last 12 national titles, but have only been champions once, in 2011-12. Over the past 40 years, USC (2003-04) and Nebraska (1994-95) have been the only other teams to be successful. The U never did, and neither did Bobby Bowden’s Florida State Seminoles.

Some title defenses fall flat quickly, but champions often come quite a distance before succumbing. Florida State (2014), Alabama (2016 and 2018) and Clemson (2017 and 2019) have all returned to CFP, for example. But when the end comes, it can be pretty tough. Think Oregon 59, FSU 20 (as of 2014) or Clemson 42, Bama 13 (as of 2018).Learn more on Bill Connelly’s Champions Week preview (ESPN +).
