Claxton community packs football stadium in memory of high school teacher

CLAXTON, Ga. (WTOC) – Friends, family and colleagues stood in the rain Tuesday night to mourn the loss of a Claxton High School teacher.

Julie Sikes died in a car accident on Monday evening.

“Without a doubt, braving the elements tonight and being here is a testament that her life will extend far beyond the years she has had here on Earth,” said County School System Superintendent Dr. Marty Waters. of Evans.

Despite the rain, Claxton came together to remember her.

“In Ecclesiastes, the third chapter, we read that there is a time and a season under heaven for everything…we never dreamed yesterday that Julie’s time here on Earth would be over,” Waters said. .

Packing the Pecan Grove football stadium with candles and umbrellas, they took moments of silence and shared their fondest memories of her.

“When I arrived at Claxton High, Mrs. Sikes welcomed me as one of her own,” said Claxton High School student Lena Mincey.

Sikes graduated from Georgia Southern University and took her talents to Claxton High School in 2012…her first and only step as a teacher.

“Ms. Sikes will definitely be remembered for the way she cared about her students,” Mincey said. “I don’t think any other teacher can come close to the effect she had on us and of the love she had for us.”

And the love she had for her family.

“His favorite activity was going to be watching Cade at all of his sporting events and watching him excel,” the superintendent said.

Her students and loved ones said she will never be forgotten.

“I love you Mrs. Sikes,” Mincey said.

“We know you’re upstairs shining on us. Thank you for sharing your life with us and setting an incredible example of love, acceptance and service,” Waters said.

The school district announced that Claxton High School will close early Thursday.

The school will release students at 1:00 p.m. and provide transportation to and from its memorial service.

All high school sporting events have been canceled for the rest of the week.
